US Windows Phone 7 debut on November 8th 2010?

It’s looking more and more likely that Windows Phone 7 won’t be arriving in the US until early November, unlike the expected October debut in Europe.  After speculation over the weekend that Microsoft is planning a WP7 launch party in New York City on October 11th, Paul Thurrott has chimed in with word from his own “very reliable source” that in fact the company expects to debut Windows Phone 7 in the US on November 8th 2010.

In fact, Thurrott claims, the October 11th event is unrelated to Windows Phone.  That still leaves rumors of an October 21st event in Europe which will see the new smartphone platform go on sale in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

Nokia E7 gets expensive Jan 10th 2010 pre-order listing [Updated]

Nokia promised Q4 2010 availability for the new Nokia E7 business-centric QWERTY smartphone when they launched the Symbian^3 device back at Nokia World 2010, but according to retailer Expansys they might miss that window.  Their new product page for the E7 suggests it’s due on Monday 10th January 2011.

expansys nokia e7

They’ve also got it priced a fair bit higher than Nokia’s original suggestions: the Finnish company tipped a €495 sticker for the E7, but Expansys are currently asking the equivalent of €688.  Obviously there’ll be subsidized deals when the E7 hits the carrier market, but it doesn’t bode well for SIM-free customers.

Still, there’s a long time to go until the end of the year, and we imagine Expansys are looking to factor in some wiggle room both in terms of price and availability.  Nokia is yet to put up its own pre-order page for the E7, but we’re checking with the company as to whether there’s any change in the expected RRP or release.

Update: Nokia tells us that there is no change to the E7′s Q4 2010 ship window, nor their pricing.  They point out that they have no influence over retailer pricing, and that Expansys – like other stores – set their own final figures.

Sharp Galapagos ereader Android tablets get official [Video]

Sharp has spilled the official beans on its two new ereader tablets, with the bizarrely named Galapagos platform being the name both for the hardware and the company’s new ebook ecosystem.  The two Sharp Galapagos slates each run Android: the “mobile” model has a 5.5-inch 1024 x 600 display, while the “home” version has a 10.8-inch 1366 x 800 display; LCD displays are used, rather than the E Ink panels more regularly found on ereaders.

Navigation each is via the touchscreen, though the smaller model also has a trackball for more straightforward one-handed operation.  No sign of integrated 3G (at least at this stage; we’ve heard talk of a Verizon partnership for the US in the past) but there’s WiFi b/g to take advantage of the Galapagos ebook service’s automatic periodical delivery for things like regular newspapers and magazines.

There’s also a web browser, Office file viewer and a reading-centric social networking app, and Sharp will bundle their Galapagos Station PC app for managing ebook content.  No word on pricing, but the Galapagos ereader tablets will arrive in Japan in December along with a 30,000-strong catalog of magazines, newspapers and ebooks.

SHAtter exploit could let hacked iPhone 4 use official iOS updates [Video]

Say “shattered” and “iPod touch” in the same sentence, and we’d usually think you’d been careless with your new PMP.  Unfortunately for Apple’s repairs department, however, SHAtter is actually a new exploit that should eventually replace now closed loophole used by the jailbreakme.com site.

shatter ipod touch jailbreak 580x339

Video demo after the cut

It’s the handiwork of the Chronic Dev Team, and as can be seen in the video below is enough to jailbreak a fourth-gen iPod touch.  The video was created by the iPhone Dev Team, who loaded SHAtter into their PwnageTool as a proof of concept.

However, they’re also saying that doing so is “overkill”, and that SHAtter will really come into its own as a tool to enable iPhone 4 users to take advantage of Apple’s official iOS updates while still preserving their baseband and ultrasn0w carrier unlock.  The bad news is that fettling SHAtter to deliver that isn’t a simple process, and so there’s no timescale as to when we might see the exploit arrive in the wild.

Apple TV starts shipping as new orders delayed

Looks like we have our answer about the Apple TV: after speculation that the refreshed media streamer was suffering 2-3 weeks of delays, we’ve now heard from several readers that they’ve been receiving shipping notifications.  The news follows pre-order payments being taken last Thursday.

Apple TV1

The news seems to suggest that Apple has been surprised by the number of Apple TV pre-orders, since the company’s store still lists the compact STB with a shipping estimate of 2-3 weeks.  Pre-order customers, meanwhile, should apparently expect to receive their units early this week.

AT&T HTC Mondrian ads leak ahead of tipped Oct 21 Windows Phone 7 debut

If you hadn’t already guessed, Windows Phone 7 is fast approaching.  Not only have further “source familiar” with the launch schedule tipped Neowin to an October 21st worldwide launch event – as well as an October 11th NYC “open house” to show off some of the devices – a couple of leaked HTC Mondrian adverts were spotted by WMPoweruser.

Windows Phone 7 Ad HTC Mondrian 580x348

Videos after the cut

The HTC Mondrian is headed to AT&T – both according to previous leaks and to these new adverts themselves – and looks a whole lot like the HTC Schubert spotted in the wild a while back.  Its specifications are obviously unconfirmed, but going by its Mozart Euro cousin we’re expecting a WVGA Super LCD display, a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and an 8-megapixel camera.

As for the tipped launch date, that’s supposedly for the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.  No confirmation on whether WP7 handsets will arrive at the same time in the US or, as was rumored before, that they won’t show up there until November.
