I missed the viral part of this video last week, but it’s funny nonetheless. The video on YouTube was of an actor that was supposed to be a student from MIT that had developed a hardware device for the iPhone hat turned the thing into a stun gun. The Stun Fone product was apparently picked up by all sorts of major outlets like CBS News, the Wall Street Journal and more.
I can say from the writer’s side of being tricked, that sort of thing can really piss off a writer. Some publications take geeks covering things that turn out to be fake very seriously, people can end up in trouble, and then there is the inevitable post to readers to tell them you were fooled. I have learned to loathe April over the years because companies tend to start posting fake products two weeks before and for the entire month after.
The fake product has supposed to make the iPhone into a 90,000 volt stun gun that could shock someone without really hurting them. The point of the campaign was to illustrate the power of a single idea according to the company behind it. All I can say is after getting fooled some outlets might be leery of anything that the company shows off in the future even if it is legitimate. Still, the product was interesting even if it was an utter lie. Check out the video below.
I am a geek that likes to spend money. I’m not interested in standing around trying on clothes or waiting for the wife to try on 156 items at once and then not buy anything. I am interested in shopping for cool toys, gadgets, and games though. If you like to shop and are brave enough to hit the stores on Black Friday and want to use some tech to make your shopping easier we have a new app for you.
The app is called Black Flyday and it is available only on Android smartphones. The app is designed to allow friends that are shopping separately to share the good deals that they find in stores. The app uses GPS and the user can find deals within a certain radius of where they are. Then they can go to the stores and buy the items they find.
There are versions of the app for English and Spanish speakers and in addition to GPS enabled deals; the app has a bulletin board that users can share their deals on too. The app integrates Facebook Friends and it is free to use on Black Friday. Using the app after Black Friday is $9.99 for lifetime service.
HTC has filed for a pair of US trademarks, and in the process has reignited rumors about a new MID or tablet device. The trademarks – for “HTC EVO Shift 4G” and “HTC EVO 4G Shift” – would certainly seem to imply some connection between the current HTC EVO 4G WiMAX phone on Sprint and the long-departed HTC Shift dual-OS tablet.
Unfortunately, since trademark applications are all we have to go on, there’s no actual indication of what hardware HTC might have in mind to pair with the new name. The most likely possibility is a large-screen (the EVO 4G has a 4.3-inch display) Android MID/smartphone with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.
Still, it doesn’t stop us wondering about something more interesting, along the lines of a 7-inch HTC tablet with integrated 4G to take on Samsung’s Galaxy Tab. Rumors of an HTC tablet have been circulating for some time, though last we heard they were delayed.
We’ve already shown you Gigabyte’s offerings for Intel’s upcoming “Sandy Bridge” Core 2011 processor refresh; now ASUS is tipping its hand. The company has been showing off its Intel P67 chipset based ‘boards, including the TUF Series Sabertooth P67 – which has a so-called “Tactical Vest” that forces cool air across all the essential motherboard components – and the overclock-hungry Republic of Gamers Maximus IV Extreme.
The Maximus IV Extreme has ROG Connect and RC Bluetooth support, as well as ROG iDirect for iPhone and iPad support. There’s also GPU TweakIt, for fine tuning both CPU and GPU performance from the same UI. The company is also working on a second version that will integrate a network processing unit (NPU) and sound card.
Both get USB 3.0 and Bluetooth, unsurprisingly, together with gigabit ethernet and all the connectivity you’d expect from a high-end motherboard. They should drop alongside Intel’s Sandy Bridge range in early 2011.
ASUS Introduces New Technology in Global Series of Technical Seminars

ASUS has just completed a series of technical seminars that showcased its latest motherboard innovations. Attendees were mostly members of global media outlets.
Held around the world between October 30 and November 15, the seminars provided a stage for several new ASUS technologies, all featured on upcoming ASUS motherboards that use new Intel® P67 and H67 chipsets. These include the pioneering Dual Intelligent Processors motherboard design that features two dedicated co-processors for performance and power management, the TurboV Processing Unit (TPU) and Energy Processing Unit (EPU). Attendees were also treated to an introduction of next-generation Dual Intelligent Processors 2 with DIGI+ VRM digital power management.
Brand new motherboards from ASUS’ celebrated Republic of Gamers brand were also on show, as were ruggedized models from its TUF (The Ultimate Force) range. These high-performance motherboards have some of the most sophisticated overclocking capabilities in the world, along with superior cooling technology.
Dual Intelligent Processors technology continues to evolve
ASUS first introduced the innovative Dual Intelligent Processors technology in June 2010. It combines the advantages of TPU overclocking and performance optimization with EPU power consumption optimization on the motherboard itself, increasing overall system performance and saving money through reduced energy costs.
The new Dual Intelligent Processors 2 technology introduces all-digital DIGI+ VRM power controls that allow far greater flexibility when managing a PC’s energy infrastructure. The improved response and fidelity of the power provided to the entire system increases stability and extends component lifespan for substantially better performance and value.
ASUS also highlighted its advancements in user-friendly interface design. These include BT GO! If you thought Intel weren’t taking MeeGo seriously, think again. The MeeGo Conference 2010 has kicked off in Dublin this morning, and Intel has just told attendees that everyone is getting a free Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3t convertible touchscreen netbook running the open-source OS.
We reviewed the IdeaPad S10-3t back in March 2010, finding it was sluggish under Windows 7 and suffered from mediocre battery life; in the end, only aggressive pricing saved it. Free is obviously better than discounted, however, and we’ll be interested to hear how MeeGo runs on the Atom CPU; after all, this is Intel’s main push for mobility products.
