Microsoft swaps out Windows Phone Chief Andy Lees

Microsoft is swapping out Windows Phone Chief Andy Lees to a new role that will have him involved in a new “time-critical opportunity” involving both Windows Phone and Windows 8. Details on the shakeup were revealed by AllThingsD, which obtained an internal memo issued by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.

“I have asked Andy Lees to move to a new role working for me on a time-critical opportunity focused on driving maximum impact in 2012 with Windows Phone and Windows 8,” said Ballmer in the memo. “We have tremendous potential with Windows Phone and Windows 8 and this move sets us up to really deliver against that potential.”

Lees has been leading the Windows Phone group for the past three years, but the platform has been slow to pickup and still has not gained much in market share despite positive reviews of the new Windows Phone 7.5 Mango update. Next year will be critical with the release of Nokia’s first Windows Phone device.

To replace Lees will be Terry Myerson, who is a corporate VP of Windows Phone Engineering. Myerson will take over some of Lees responsibilities, including business development and marketing, but will not be granted the president title of Windows Phone.

Diablo III opening cinematic released

There’s nothing quite like a good ol’ game of Diablo to get you out of the everyday hum-drum of normal human life, and as Blizzard has proven with their eternally entertaining first two installments of this birds-eye-view hack and slash adventure game, Diablo III has a lot to live up to — today we get our first glimpse of the first three minutes of the game as it’s set to be released in 2012, cinematic one and the start of the continued hellish storyline. What you’re about to see is Deckard Cain, also known as the dirty old man whose fortune it’s been to both be the keeper of the lore of this game series and the one who’s always burning in hell while you fight the forces of evil. Cain has a niece now too, and as a meteor shower is about to prove, his ramblings about the return of the forces of hell to the earth to bring about a new terror are more than just a little bit true – great holes of flame!

This isn’t the first time we’ve posted an anticipatory story about the coming of the third Diablo game, also known as Diablo 3, and it won’t be the last by the looks of it. Bear witness to this first cinematic and, if you’re lucky enough, you’ll not have seen the second one also in this post, the one with Cain’s niece continuing Cain’s work into the nightmare heart of the Black Soulstone. This language epic enough for you? It can never EVER be epic enough when it comes to Diablo. Here’s how it all begins:

It looks basically like Cain has discovered that the evil is not finished, even though we’ve massacred Diablo Lord of Terror, Mephisto Lord of Hatred, and Baal Lord of Destruction already. Now what we’ve got is a show not unlike what we saw in the Lord of the Rings series from a few years ago with moving pages and stories of war, this time with some gigantic beasts with horns and fire galore – seems similar to the last game, doesn’t it? Have a look at the stained glass window above Cain’s desk and see Tryael, the Archangel of Justice you should be familiar with from the Sanctuary in the last level of Diablo II, the final defeat of Baal in Lord of Destruction, and under the desert in Tal Rasha’s tomb as well. Will this protector of good be an ally to you the hero again as he was in Diablo II, or will he have become corrupted back to his original demonic form?

Then there’s this slightly older and just as telling cinematic containing Azmodan, Lord of Sin. A fat grub of a demon whose goal it is to ravage the earth until they find the Black Soulstone. When the Black Soulstone is found, Azmodan says he’ll be able to reign as the Prime Evil.

Lovely stuff – can’t wait to see it! Burning flesh and the massacre of all goodness!

iTunes 10.5.2 update brings CD audio distortion fix and more

Following complaints about audio distortion problems when playing CDs via iTunes, Apple has released an update today to fix the issue as well as bring unspecified enhancements to iTunes Match. This update to iTunes version 10.5.2 is available for download today on both Mac and Windows.

The last update to iTunes 10.5.1 brought the iTunes Match feature, which lets you store your entire music collection in the iCloud, whether or not all the music was purchased through iTunes. Songs that matched those already in Apple’s libraries are streamed from 256kbps master copies, while songs that cannot be matched are uploaded for streaming.

iTunes 10.5.2 brings some improvements to iTunes Match, but mainly addresses the audio distortion problem that several users have experienced while trying to play or import certain CDs. The update for Mac computers requires OS X 10.5 or above, while the Windows version of the update comes in either 32-bit or 64-bit.

AT&T, T-Mobile consider deal re-cut, Dish steps in

For months now we’ve been hearing that AT&T and T-Mobile have been going back and forth with various investigatory boards, the FCC, the Department of Justice, their grandmothers, and today its come to light that AT&T is considering “recutting” its original $39 billion dollar deal for T-Mobile USA in light of U.S. antitrust authorities ever-rising opposition. The antitrust case at hand has been postponed in face of the possible recutting, and both AT&T and the Justice Department have joined in asking the judge to postpone all proceedings in the court until January 18th, 2012 — that way everyone can take a rest and drink some egg-nog while they mull everything over.

T-Mobile parent Deutsche Telekom AG and AT&T have noted that they’re currently actively considering “whether and how to revise our current transaction.” This is a pretty clear sign that the deal as it existed earlier this year simply isn’t going to pan out, and though AT&T up until last week said they were still going forward with the plan as it’s existed for months, their tune as now changed up just a bit. AT&T Chief Executive Randall Stephenson spoke last week on how they had a “strong case” against the Justice Department’s claims against them.

Earlier today though, after their joint filing, the trial in this case is “off indefinitely”, or so says the “person familiar with the matter” said to the Wall Street Journal. The judge in this case, U.S. District Court Judge Ellen S. Huvelle, criticized the companies’ decision to pull out on their application for a merger from the FCC saying that “everybody’s time will be wasted.”

Meanwhile Bloomberg is reporting that Dish Network Corp., the second largest satellite-TV provider in the USA, is considering trying to partner with T-Mobile if AT&T’s bid to take over ends up failing. The source for this announcement is an interview with Dish Chief Executive Officer Joseph Clayton, who noted the following:

“We’re not interested in making money on selling our spectrum. We want to use it to create a national wireless network, video, voice and data. We’ve got expertise in satellite-TV, and we will in satellite broadband. The voice part, we’ll need some help with. We feel if the AT&T-T-Mobile deal goes through, we win. If it doesn’t go through, we still win.” – Clayton

In other words, if no deal is made, Dish snaps their fingers and makes something else happen. Gotta get those customers one way or the other! It’s a love triangle in the making!

AT&T, Verizon both testing Nokia Lumia 800 with LTE

According to CNET sources, both AT&T and Verizon are currently testing LTE versions of Nokia’s Lumia 800 Windows Phone. The device has already launched in Europe and is expected to hit stateside in early 2012, likely making a debut at CES in January.

Microsoft has been vague about when Windows Phones would support LTE. But if carriers are indeed testing the LTE variant of the Lumia 800 right now, it suggests that the first LTE Windows Phone would arrive early next year.

The Lumia 800 is Nokia’s first Windows Phone device to come out of the partnership with Microsoft and a major part of its commercial success will rely on carrier support. And with carriers now all clamoring to offer 4G LTE devices, LTE support will be essential to pushing the Lumia 800 here in the states.

This is consistent with sources from a previous report in November suggesting that AT&T was actively pursuing the Nokia device for its 4G LTE network, preparing a customized LTE variant of the Lumia 800 as its next flagship device.

Microsoft updates OneNote app with iPad support

Microsoft announced today that it is making its popular note-taking app, OneNote, available for the iPad. With this update to version 1.3, the OneNote app now features a new interface specifically designed to take advantage of the iPad’s larger screen.

The update brings several improvements that extend to the iPhone version of the app as well. Some of the new features include a tabbed user interface, quick note creation in the Unfiled Notes section, table rendering, localization into several new languages and markets, improved Windows Live sign-in experience, and the option to sync notebooks only over a Wi-Fi connection.

The OneNote app requires iOS 4.3 or later to work and also requires a Windows Live account to sync the notebooks with Microsoft’s SkyDrive cloud storage. The service is free up to 500 active notes with unlimited notes available for $5 on the iPhone and $15 on the iPad.

Honda Acura NSX concept teased for 2012 Detroit Auto Show

The team at Honda has announced that they will reveal a new Acura NSX concept at next year’s Detroit Auto Show, this re-starting the line that was discontinued in 2005 with the original NSX. While details remain scant on the automobile, Honda did note that it would be showing the “styling direction for the next generation of Acura’s super sports car.” This showing is likely to be somewhat of a next step from 2004′s Detroit Auto Show reveal of the Acura High-Performance Sports Concept, as shown below.

Again what you’re seeing above is not the new model that will be revealed in Detroit inside 2012, but the original NSX shown in 2004 at the same event. What you’ll quite likely be getting with this new model is an all-wheel-drive system, first of all, this of course if Honda decides to go beyond what CNET‘s Wayne Cunningham describes as a possible “mere styling exercise.” Speculation is that this all-wheel-drive system will be the same as what has recently been revealed for Honda’s Earth Dreams Technology announcement, complete with a direct injection 3.5-liter V-6 as a main power unit and two 20 kilowatt electric motors for torque vectoring.

Besides this there’ll also a main drive motor with a seven speed dual clutch automated manual transmission as well. Honda has also stated that they’ll be brining another concept vision to the show in the Acura ILX, an entry level premium car also living in the Acura environment. The ILX will be the first Acura hybrid, and will play nicely next to the NSX or we’ll turn this car right around and go back home. Finally there will be a 2013 Honda Accord Coupe concept as well as a 2013 Acura RDX, both of them more than likely showing up in Detroit at the 2012 event as well.

Modern Warfare 3 beats Avatar for $1 Billion Record

This week the folks at Activision and Blizzard are certainly more than just a little bit joyful at the news that their game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 crossed the $1 billion mark in sales earlier today, this making it the only entertainment property in the world to eclipse the previous record of $1 billion in 17 days as set by the movie Avatar in 2009. If that wasn’t enough for you, the amount of people currently in the Call of Duty community (owning and playing the game) is now approximately 30 million, this amount greater than “the combined populations of the cities of New York, London, Tokyo, Paris and Madrid.” Will they form their own country called Duty City? That is the question.

The folks who hold the rights to Call of Duty are using this opportunity to call the franchise as amongst media empires like “Star Wars”, “Harry Potter”, “Lord of the Rings” and the National Football League (NFL) as whenever a new game comes out, everyone who loves the line freaks out and has a heart attack until they get to play it. Purchases come almost as a matter of fact rather than after a vetting process by reviewers and in-store previews like a lot of the rest of the games in the market today. When you’ve got a game series that’s continuously done as well as this one has, people just don’t hesitate anymore.

Call of Duty Elite, they also mention, is one of the fastest growing online services today with more than six MILLION new players registered since November 8th, 2011 including over a million paid subscribers to date. They compare this to such services as Netflix, Hulu Plus, Sirius XM and Xbox LIVE, noting that they didn’t have a million paid subscribers until at least a year after launch.

Are you amongst those who have joined the cause, the cause being the blasting of enemies and gathering together in a mutual love for the exploding of human bodies? If you’re not playing this game yet, why not? Don’t you want to be part of the biggest murder party since the last edition of Call of Duty? Join in on the fun!

Happy Birdday! Angry Birds Officially Turns 2 – New Update Coming Soon To Android

This image has no alt text

Guess they really meant it when they said time flies when you’re having fun because it’s officially been 2 years since Angry Birds exploded onto the mobile scene with their physics-based puzzle game. With over 500 million downloads, Rovio wanted to celebrate their 2nd “Birdday” with a spiffy new update to the original game. So what does Rovio have planned?

As you probably guessed, there will be 15 all new birthday themed levels to fling those testy little birds through and along with those levels, comes the addition of all new achievements for those of you that like the added challenge of completing a level 100%. The best part about the new Birdday update? All the original levels will come fully unlocked allowing players to go back and play old favorites, or finally advanced past one they were stuck on.

Looking ahead to 2012, we can only guess where Rovio will take their beloved franchise from here. There’s been rumors of a cart-based racer, ala Mario Kart or even a “Greedy Pigs spin-off allowing players to get the other side of the story. While some of you are all “Angry-birds-ed out,” it’s one of the few games I continue to come back to, time and time again. The new Birdday update should hit the Android Market sometime next week.
