Apple Updates Final Cut Pro X
Apple today released Final Cut Pro X version 10.0.3, a significant update to its revolutionary professional video editing application. Version 10.0.3 introduces Multicam Editing, which automatically syncs up to 64 angles of video and photos; advanced chroma keying for handling complex adjustments right in the app; and enhanced XML for a richer interchange with third-party apps and plug-ins that support the fast growing Final Cut Pro X ecosystem. It also includes a beta version of Broadcast Monitoring that supports Thunderbolt devices as well as PCIe cards. Final Cut Pro X version 10.0.3 is available from the Mac App Store for $299.99 (US) to new users, or as a free update for existing Final Cut Pro X customers.
Final Cut Pro X Update Reinvents Multicam Editing
StudioDaily’s Beth Marchant reports on “key features” delivered in
Final Cut Pro version 10.0.3. Marchant interviews Radical Media CTO Evan Schechtman — an early adopter of Final Cut Pro X — who calls version 10.0.3 “an even bigger deal than the original release,” noting that his company is “ready to transition completely to Final Cut Pro X now that broadcast monitoring and multicam editing are in the mix.”
T-Mobile to offer Square card reader to business customers
Anyone with an iPhone can apply for a free Square credit card reader. But now the process is easier than ever, as T-Mobile will begin offering the revolutionary small business solution at the point of purchase to customers who sign up for a business plan. It’s a move that will increase awareness not only for Square but also for T-Mobile’s new push to attract enterprise users.
What exactly comes with a T-Mobile business plan? The carrier offers service rates as low as $60 per month for two lines, as well as special bundles of apps that are designed for business customers (e.g., DropBox, Evernote, and LinkedIn). The carrier wants to be defined as the best option for those customers. For Square, it means finally having a brick-and-mortar retail presence.
Square has been a cataclysmic help for small business owners who are out hitting the pavement and may be able to pick up sales that would have been lost if they were only able to accept cash. Said one Nikki Halgren, a small business owner who was quoted in the T-Mobile/Square press release, the carrier “not only keeps me connected on-the-go, but [makes] it easy for me to get paid fast with my T-Mobile smartphone and Square. T-Mobile has made it simple and, as a result, I’ve nearly doubled my business over last year.”

Camera+

Camera+ ($1.99) by tap tap tap
Available on iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad
I’ll keep this short: Camera+ is probably the best all-around camera app you’re gonna find in the App Store. I’m sure this is old news to a lot of you, but if you’ve never used it you should definitely give it a look.
I used to have apps like ToyCamera, Lomo Camera, and numerous others on my iPhone but Camera+ has replaced them all! Those other apps are great for certain things, but this one is basically the Swiss Army Knife of camera apps. All the retro filters and other functions like flash, crop, flip, and borders are awesome, but honestly the thing I like best is that Camera+ doesn’t automatically add every crappy pic I take to that stupid Photostream. My understanding is that the ability to delete items from Photostream will be getting easier in a future iOS update… currently you have to turn Photostream off and then back on in order to delete individual pics… but frankly I’d rather just not have every dadgum photo added to this thing. Yeah, I said DADGUM.
Ok, enough bitching about Photostream. The Camera+ features I use most often are the Flash filter which just brightens pics up, and I’m also a big fan of the FX Effects selections which range from black & white to depth of field to all kinds of Lomo-ish looks. Additional filters are available with an in-app purchase.
Numerous borders are also included, some of which allow you to add a caption. This is cool, but it would be even cooler if Camera+ would let you add a caption or speech bubble to any photo without having to use a specific frame.
Something else I have to complain about is that starting up Camera+ when there’s a hot photo op takes a little longer than I’d like. The other day Kim Kardashian was picking her nose about 10 feet away from me… she was practically up to her second knuckle and I missed it because it took a few seconds too long to get Camera+ going! Ok that’s a total lie but you know what I mean.
Overall this app is awesome and easily worth $1.99.

HTC Reveals Android 4.0 Rollout For Sensation XE To Begin “Early This Year”
We learned back in November that HTC was planning to deliver Ice Cream Sandwich to their dual-core lineup sometime in 2012 only problem was — when exactly? 1st quarter? Q2? Heaven forbid towards the end of the year… Well, today we finally have a better idea of when HTC plans to update some of these confirmed devices, starting with the HTC Sensation XE.
In a reply to a user on Twitter asking when his newly purchased Sensation XE would be receiving the Android 4.0 update, HTC’s official Twitter account replied that the device would be receiving ICS “early this year.” Okay — so it’s not much but we’ll take anything at this point. After seeing what HTC plans to do with Android 4.0 melding it into their Sense UI, I know it’s not the popular opinion round here, but I, for one, am pretty excited to see what HTC comes up with.

Google TV Update Rolling Out Now For Sony Blu-Ray Players
The official Google TV Twitter account tweeted just moments ago that a software update for Sony Blu-ray players has begun rolling out. The 260MB update will bring about the ability for the players to now playback Blu-rays in the 3rd dimension and much needed speed enhancements to the Chrome browser. Lord knows, my Revue browser could perform a hell-of-a-lot quicker. If you haven’t received the update just yet, you can pull it manually by jumping into your System Settings > About > System Updates.
Leave a comment if you notice your browser performing snappier.

Nintendo DS is platform of choice for 100-year-old ‘gaming granny’
She’s been dubbed “Britain’s oldest gamer” but Kit Connell she doesn’t “feel a day over 80.” Part of the strategy to her youthful spirit and sharp mind? She plays her Nintendo DS a few hours a day. And she’s pretty active with it too, owning around a dozen games that she regularly rotates between. There are probably DS owners half her age (hell, even one-tenth her age) who probably can’t compete.
For most people, scoring an age of 64 on the DS’s Brain Training game would seem like an insult. To Connell, it’s proof that video games help keep her 100-year-old brain cells in full working order. “I much prefer to be using my brain. And I find I am very forgetful, I can’t remember things the next day. So I try to do these and it really is helping,” she said in an interview with the UK publication The Telegraph.
A corresponding video interview with Connell has received praise from around the Web. Comments on YouTube praise her spirit, with users saying, “I wish that lady were my grandma” and “I hope I’ll be [as] cool as her when I’m like 60.” She praises Nintendo for helping her stay agile and witty. In addition to Brain Training, she also owns Art Academy, Scrabble, and other largely cerebral games.

Google’s YouTube might be considering subscription service
There is no shortage of ways for YouTube to monetize its site right now. It has sponsored videos, ad-supported content, and pay-per-click overlay ads. But that might not be enough, as the head of the viral video site has suggested there might be premium content on its way to YouTube, effectively ending the great legacy of 100% no-barrier, free-to-watch videos that made the site what it is today.

YouTube CEO Salar Kamangar was at the D:Dive Into Media conference and was quoted as saying it is possible that the site might start allowing copyright holders to offer channels that require users to pay a monthly fee. “We’re a media platform want to be biz model than media partners demand,” he said.
Kamangar rolled off some statistics about the video industry as a whole, including online and offline content. He said 20% of revenue comes from the actual sale or rental of a specific title, while 40% comes from advertising and another 40% comes from subscription fees. Clearly YouTube is only engaging in one part of that pie right now, but even so it’s not exactly hurting for revenue. The thought of punching in a credit card to watch a video on YouTube seems almost un-American. It would be interesting to see if Google could pull it off.

CUPP Computing’s PunkThis board puts Android on any laptop
Want to double, triple, even quadruple the battery life of your laptop? Want to swap out the stale Windows software with a more flexible operating system known as Android? That’s the promise of an impending product from niche tech company CUPP Computing. Called the PunkThis board, it is easily installed into any laptop and brings a fully functional Android interface to the machine.
The PCB measures in at 2.5 inches and contains a complete minicomputer, including a 1 GHz ARM processor, 512 MB of RAM, a WiFi radio, mSata slot, and two microSD card ports. But what’s cool about it is the way it interacts with the other components that are already in your laptop, so you still have full access to USB ports, keyboard/mouse HDMI output, and all the other neat functionality that Android tablets don’t necessarily have.
Switching between your built-in Windows and the custom Android UI is easy as pie, or more specifically, a hotkey. So, in other words, it’s pretty darn cool. When can people actually expect to buy it? Unfortunately, that little detail remains unclear. The company has been unreliable in the past but says it is on the way soon. When it is available, it’ll cost less than $200. Sold.

Sony’s The Tester season 3 will be crazier than ever
Coming face-to-face with a box full of cockroaches, dressing up in camo gear, and trudging through mud-filled obstacle courses. That’s what it takes to be a game tester at Sony Computer Entertainment America. Yes, the reality show with the worst prize in all reality shows is back, and Sony is giving a preview of what to expect in season number three.
The Tester, which is released in weekly installments through the PlayStation Network’s video store, pits self-proclaimed PlayStation fanatics in a series of wacky and outrageous stunts until only one is left standing. The winner gets a $5,000 cash prize and the opportunity to become a full-time entry-level game tester. The show has been maligned from the beginning for its terrible prize and for the ridiculous way it tries to tie in the show’s obstacles into actual responsibilities of being a game tester (having cockroaches running up and down your face shows that you’re good under pressure, which is a trait of all good game testers. Yeah, sure).
In the “where are they now?” files, The Tester season 1 winner Will “Cyrus” Powers is now an “Associate PR Generalist”, and season 2′s victor, Matthew “Gaymer” Brown now works for Sony Pictures. Who will be the next to walk through the revolving door at Sony? Find out when The Tester 3 begins “airing” on the PlayStation Network on February 7.
