Court refuses request to review Psystar case

You have to give Psystar credit for being tenacious. The Mac clone company spent four years fighting Apple and took its legal battle all the way to the Supreme Court. According to a CNET report, the Supreme Court on Monday refused Psystar's request to review a lower court decision that prevents the company from selling non-Apple hardware with OS X.

The decision upholds the original ruling in 2009 which said Psystar "violated Apple's exclusive reproduction right, distribution right, and right to create derivative works." Apple was awarded a permanent injunction against Psystar and the company was forced to stop selling its Mac clones. This Supreme Court rejection should put an end to litigation between the two companies.

Apple tops ACSI satisfaction survey for cellphone manufacturers

Apple has done it again, topping the American Consumer Satisfaction Index survey for cellphone manufacturers and wireless carriers. The company ended up with a score of 83 points out of 100 possible, higher than any other manufacturer.

ACSI polls 70,000 consumers each year, asking questions about customer satisfaction with over 225 companies in 47 industries. This year Apple was nine points above the industry average of 74, and eight points above runners-up Nokia, HTC, and LG.

Arch-rival Samsung was near the bottom of the satisfaction barrel, with a dismal 71 point total. The formerly powerful RIM, manufacturer of the BlackBerry line of smartphones, was at the bottom. It could only scrape together 69 points, a full 14 points below Apple and five points below the industry average.

The survey also listed customer satisfaction with wireless carriers. Sprint came in at the top spot with 71 points, Verizon at 70, and AT&T and T-Mobile at 69 points. Surprisingly, AT&T's score was four points higher than its 2011 score.

Apple vs. Motorola, HTC cases consolidated

According to Florian Mueller of FOSS Patents, Apple is now battling one less lawsuit in the Southern District of Florida. Apple was fighting two separate lawsuits in the courts, one filed by Motorola Mobility and another by HTC. Judge Robert Scola decided to merge the two lawsuits because "the parties have shown a complete inability to agree upon anything and it is frustrating the progress of these cases." Apple reportedly pushed for this consolidation, while HTC and Motorola opposed it.

Report: Project Glass won’t be as robust as promo video shows

All of the cool things Google showed in its initial Project Glass promo video may not be what we get in final product form. The “terminator style overlay,” as CNet puts it, won’t be present in the first batches of the product. They report that bits of information will only be displayed just above your level field of view on the right side. That would solve the “walking into a deathtrap” scenario that people initially feared, but it makes it sound as if Google Goggles will be a lot less cool than initially imagined.

Of course, the project is still in prototype stages so we can’t be for sure that this will end up being the case once it hits store shelves. We saw that gestures worked at a basic level, however, as engineer Sebastion Thrun demonstrated an ability to take a picture and upload it to Google+ with nothing but head movement.

It’s not appropriate to pass anything off with 100% certainty at this point, but CNet indicated that whatever they saw would appear to be whatever we’ll get once it’s all said and done. We won’t know until it’s out, though, so don’t fret too much if you grew attached to that initial vision. Watch that initial vision in the YouTube embed above.

New T-Mobile devices added to Samsung’s Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade list

Samsung’s finally added the initial list of devices that will receive the upgrade to Android 4.0 on T-Mobile. The Samsung Galaxy S II was an obvious shoe-in, and the Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G makes a surprise appearance on this list. We’ve also got a couple of tablets in the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Of course, neither parties are ready to disclose a rollout date but knowing that it’s coming is half the battle. Unless something drastic changes, users of these devices can rest easy. [Samsung, thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

Baton Rouge, LA seeing AT&T 4G LTE?

AT&T confirmed this past weekend that Baton Rouge would be getting 4G LTE, but didn’t bother to offer a time frame other than “soon.” We’ve gotten a couple of independent reports that the network is live today, though we haven’t been able to find much more than that. It’s strange that AT&T would launch the network in that market without an announcement so we assume they’re just testing the network and allowing anyone who notices to hop on.

It’s not unlike what usually happens with Verizon’s rollouts as users sometimes report coverage up to a week in advance of Verizon’s official launch date. There are quite a few of you with AT&T LTE phones now so if you’re in the Baton Rouge area and you have a phone that can take advantage of LTE, be sure to check to see if you can connect. Let us know in the comments section below if you can or can’t. [Thanks Spoosh!]

Twitter for Android updated to address key bugs

Those who haven’t completely abandoned the official Twitter client for greener pastures will be happy to know a new bug-fixing update has hit the Google Play Store. Alongside the usual round of bug fixes and under-the-hood enhancements that seem to be obligatory in every update, we know that they have fixed a bug causing profile images not to load on Eclair devices, a fix for top tweets appearing out of order in the Search and Discovery views,  and a fix for sync settings. Grab the small (but relatively big) update in the Google Play Store.

LightSquared files bankruptcy

LightSquared has announced that it is officially filing for bankruptcy. The company had hinted that bankruptcy might be its next option in early April. The company has laid off many workers and still holds out hope that it might be able to resolve the concerns of US regulators who have so far blocked the wireless broadband network. The concerns about the LightSquared stem from harmful interference of its network with many GPS devices already on the market.

The company filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy yesterday in a U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Manhattan. As of February 29 of 2012, the company had $4.48 billion in assets and $2.29 billion in debt. As it became clear that the FCC was not going to approve the network, LightSquared started to lose backers and carriers. Despite bankruptcy, Falcone and the current management team will remain with the company according to a company spokesman.

LightSquared is still intent on launching the wireless 4G network. Falcone described bankruptcy filing as “necessary” to protect the company from creditors looking for a “quick profit.” The company was granted a second extension last week giving it an additional seven days to pay creditors. LightSquared’s Canadian and Bermudan affiliates also filed for bankruptcy.

Facebook has trust issues

Facebook may be poised to offer its initial shares to the public following strong demand, propelling them up to a $100 billion valuation, but the company faces other challenges ahead. One of the obstacles the social networking company might come up against is monetization troubles and public distrust. A new study has shown that 57% of Facebook users would never click on ads or sponsored content.

Around 26% of users said they “hardly ever engage” with ads, and only 4% said that they regularly click ads. On top of that, users say they didn’t feel safe buying products or services through Facebook. An MSNBC poll shows that 54% of users say they didn’t feel safe buying goods or services, and only 8% indicating that they felt completely safe.

While internet users not clicking ads isn’t news, it does mean that Facebook can’t solely rely on ad income going forward, especially as it starts to push more into the mobile market. The company is trying to reduce its reliance on ads: right now 82% of Facebook’s revenue is from advertisements, down from 98% in 2009. If it starts to work commercials and ads into mobile apps, users could simply ignore them or leave the platform altogether, with only a small sliver of users clicking and generating the necessary income.

The flipside of the argument is that that small portion of users is all that Facebook needs: the service current holds around 900 million users, so even a fraction of the population clicking through on ads is sure to generate huge revenue. Facebook is looking into other ways to monetize the service despite that, recently testing a new Highlighted posts feature that would allow individuals and brands to pay a small amount of money to bump important posts.
